How to play
Precision Range is a ballistics shooting simulator. You stand at the firing point of an outdoor range with distance boards up to 400 metres and a wind flag on every line. Choose a discipline, a weapon and a difficulty in the menu and click Start discipline. Each bullet is a real projectile: it needs time to reach the target, falls on the way and drifts with the wind, so at long range you aim higher or change the zero of your sights.
The game is made for a computer with a mouse and a keyboard. Its menus are in English by default; open Settings and set Language to Slovenčina to play in Slovak.
Disciplines
- Basic accuracy: 10 shots at a paper target 25 m away, without wind.
- Long range: three shots each at 100, 200 and 400 m; the wind changes with each stage.
- Moving target: 10 shots at a paper target 100 m away that slides up to 3.4 m to each side.
- Rapid hits: knock down 10 steel plates between 50 and 150 m in the marked order within 45 seconds, with 15 shots.
- Changing wind: 10 shots at gongs and paper targets 200 to 400 m away; the crosswind changes after every shot.
- Free practice: the toolbar sets the distance, the target type, movement and the wind (up to 6 m/s). Ammunition is unlimited.
A paper target scores 10 to 5 points by ring. A gong gives 10 for its centre and 8 elsewhere, a falling plate 10. The results screen shows the score, hit rate, average deviation, group size and a hit map with the mean point of impact (MPI). The medal depends on your share of the maximum score, 10 points for every shot the discipline allows: gold from 85 %, silver from 70 %, bronze from 50 %.
Weapons and difficulty
- 9mm pistol: 380 m/s, 15-round magazine, red dot sight with 1.4× and 1.85× zoom, zeroed at 25 m.
- 5.56 DMR: 740 m/s, 10 rounds, scope with 2.5×, 4.5× and 6×, zeroed at 100 m.
- .308 bolt-action rifle: 850 m/s, 5 rounds, scope with 3.5×, 5.5× and 8×, zeroed at 100 m; it cycles the bolt for about a second after each shot.
Assisted shows a green circle in the scope where the bullet will land, with half the sway and weaker wind. Standard leaves you the rangefinder, the wind readout and the reticle scale. Challenge hides the predictor and the wind readout, so you judge the wind by the flags, and the sway and the wind are stronger.
Controls
- Aim: after Start the browser captures the mouse pointer and the mouse turns the rifle. Without the capture, hold the right mouse button and move the mouse. The arrow keys also aim.
- Shoot: left mouse button or Space; R reloads.
- Scope: hold the right mouse button. The wheel or Z / X changes the magnification.
- Breath: hold Shift for up to about 5 seconds and the reticle sways only a tenth as much. If you run out of breath, the sway doubles until you recover.
- More: Q / E set the zero (25 to 400 m), 1 2 3 switch weapons, A / D step sideways, Tab or H shows the DOPE table, C changes the reticle colour, Esc or P pauses and F fills the screen.
How the ballistics work
Six times per frame the game updates the bullet’s velocity v and position. The acceleration has three parts: air drag against the motion, gravity and a sideways push from the wind w:
a = −c · |v| · v + (k · w, −g′, 0)
The drag coefficient c is 0.0011 for the pistol, 0.00058 for the DMR and 0.00038 for the .308. The game multiplies g = 9.81 m/s² by 1.25, 2.35 or 2.75 so that the drop shows clearly in the scope.
The reticle is marked in divisions (DIV). One division is an angle of 8.5 milliradians, which covers 0.85 m at 100 m and 3.4 m at 400 m. The hold you need is
hold [DIV] = atan(drop / distance) / 0.0085
The DOPE table works this out for the current weapon; for the .308 it lists 1.0 division at 400 m. Zeroing does the same job: it tilts the barrel up by exactly the angle the bullet falls at the zero distance, so the bullet meets the centre of the reticle there and you only hold for the difference.
Tips
- Before a long shot, set the zero to the distance on the rangefinder.
- The longer and straighter the flags fly, the stronger the wind.
- If your group on the hit map sits low, aim higher or raise the zero.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the mouse pointer disappear?
The game uses the browser’s Pointer Lock so that the mouse can aim without hitting the edge of the screen. Esc gives the pointer back and pauses the game.
Why did my shot land low at 400 m?
The rifles start zeroed at 100 m, so at 400 m the bullet falls well below the centre. Hold higher by the divisions the scope suggests or set the zero to 400 m.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
No. Aiming, the scope and holding your breath need a mouse and a keyboard.
